Concerned about ageing, want to reverse or avert it? Human skin is constantly under threat, since it is exposed on a daily basis to a number of damaging environmental factors such as wind, sun, cold and pollution. To top that, stress, emotional changes, hormonal fluctuations and old age can also affect the skin negatively. These internal and external attacks are often combined to weaken the skin’s appearance and elasticity.

More specifically, constant use of specific facial muscles is the main cause of facial lines and wrinkles. Moreover, the deterioration of the natural collagen and hyaluronic acid found in the skin, will lead to a significant loss of plumpness accompanied by wrinkles and fine lines. Luckily, people can restore and prevent their youthful looking skin with special skin treatments at a specialised dental clinic, such as Harley Street Dental Clinic in W1. Some dentists are fully qualified to offer Botox and dermal fillers, two quick, minimally invasive procedures that allow patients to return to their normal lifestyle immediately.

What is Botox?

Botox is the name of an altered, purified protein that helps fight frown lines and wrinkles caused by overactive facial muscles. Botox simply blocks the release of a special substance which is responsible for muscle movement, preventing the contraction of muscles that are directly associated with the face.

Patients can have Botox at a specialised dental clinic, administered by a trained cosmetic dentist. The safety and efficiency of this product, when used properly, has been time-tested, yet, not every treatment is suitable for everybody, and therefore, patients are strongly advised to consult their dentist beforehand.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are eco-friendly substances that are injected directly into the first layers of the facial skin to help smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as restore plumpness and elasticity to the skin. There are two types of dermal fillers – collagen and hyaluronic acid.

Both substances are found naturally in the human skin and a dental clinic can offer either one or both of them in the form of injectables. Collagen, in particular, is a naturally occurring protein. However, almost 2% of the population is allergic to it, and therefore, a skin test must be carried out at least 48 hours before the treatment.
